Chapter Books

Reading chapter books to children strengthens listening skills, comprehension skills, and vocabulary.

I have been reading chapter books to the class since February.  The first book I read was Charlotte's Web.  Then we saw the movie.

We finished the book, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, and saw the play.

I am going to begin reading Pippi Longstocking.  We will watch the movie when I am finished reading the book to the class.

I have the VHS tape for the cartoon version of Pippi Longstocking. If anyone has the real life version on DVD please send it in.

Project Mailbox

Thanks to all who made the mailboxes!  The children each have one and they look wonderful.  Children are responsible for checking their mailboxes at the end of every day.

                    Cubbies

We put all of our textbooks, workbooks, and notebooks in our cubbies.  These keep our books neat.

               Homework

In Order to save on paper, the math workbook pages will be ripped out and sent home.  The children will do both sides of the math page.

The Science or Social Studies textbook will also be sent home every week in our effort to conserve paper.  These books are very colorful and educational but, they are heavy.  Please help your children carry them when they leave school.  The Science or Social Studies textbook may be returned on Friday (the day of the test).

Spelling words of the week - Test Friday

Every Friday, they will either have a Science or Social Studies Test.

1 Math workbook page each night - both sides

1 Phonics workbook page - both sides

Please fill out the Reading Log.  Some children are already on their third sheet.

Word Wall

The First Grade has a word wall.  We use the word wall to copy words that we need to spell and use during the day. We have lists of sports, animals, colors, plants, opposites, places, shapes, people, food, action words, and holidays.

We also have 33 colorful sentence strips that help us know what a sentence is.

Here are some of our sentences:

A puppy is a baby dog.

The Yankees won the World Series in 2009.

Friends are nice.
