Summer Reading Assignment

Under the Hawthorn Tree

by Marita Conlon-McKenna

Students are required to keep a reading journal and record their thoughts at the end of each period of reading.  They need to date and list the pages read, at the top of each entry.  They will also make a dictionary containing 10 or more difficult words and their meaning.  In addition the students will make a list of at least five questions that everyone should be able to answer after reading the book.  The reading journal will be collected the first day the students return to school, after the summer vacation.

Summer Social Studies Assignment (Grades 5-8)

Spend some time becoming familiar with the website

icivics.org

It's a fun, interesting way to learn how government works.  There are games, quizes and simulations.

For parents, there's a link to many articles about the importance of learning Civics and also an interesting article about children's use of video games.

In addition, students should find a minimum of 3 newspaper articles related to civics.  In September, you will hand in the articles with a summary paragraph and a paragraph explaining your opinion about the content of the article.

This is not a lot of work and is designed to have students keep up with what's happening in their world.

Summer is a wonderful time to learn -- Helping your child to see that learning is fun is so important to whether or not your child will take the initiative to be the best they can be.

Math: summer math packets will be given out on the last day of school
