Introducing "Lily" the black bear...

***************************

UPDATE -- January 22

We are so excited!!

Lily gave birth today at about 12:40 p.m. and we were online when it happened!  We heard the new cub's cries and even saw a tiny arm pass by the camera.  Lily is busy protecting the cubs so we cannot actually see how many there are, but we can hear them crying and making sucking noises. Their cries sound just like a human baby's.

We will continue to follow Lily and her cubs as they grow.

***************************

As part of our Science lesson on hibernation, we have been watching Lily, a three-year-old black bear, "live" via web cam on our classroom computers.

Lily has made her den under some logs in Ely, Minnesota and is expected to give birth to cubs sometime in January.  Watching her  has been a very interesting experience.

We will continue to track her in class on a daily basis, but if you want to see her from home, you can log onto www.bear.org

You might also like to watch the feature story on Lily from the "Today" show at www.msnbc.com.

 Announcing Lily's Journal!!

We have been following Lily's daily progress by writing about and drawing what we have observed on the web cam.

Each night, one student is chosen to update the entry in our class journal.  We share what we have written the next morning during "Circle Time".  Each student is eagerly anticipating his/her turn to complete the evening report!

Specific instructions for completing the log have been sent home and are also listed inside the front cover of the journal.

Happy viewing!
